Schiphol and central Amsterdam

A lower fare with a longer connection at Schiphol, and a massage in the hours it buys

Booking sites often show a lower fare for the itinerary with the long wait in the middle. Travellers who pick it on purpose can treat the connection as part of the trip rather than a cost paid to save money.

Search for a long journey through Schiphol and the lower fares often come with the longest gaps: five, seven or nine hours between flights instead of ninety minutes. Most travellers avoid them. Some choose them deliberately, because a long connection planned in advance is a chance to stop, lie down and take a Schiphol airport massage between two long legs.

Choosing the itinerary

Look at the arrival and departure times, not only at the length of the gap. A connection from morning to late afternoon works better than one from midnight to dawn, because hotels, shuttles and therapists' hours are all easier in daylight. In the daytime the hotel shuttles run often and rooms let by the hour are easy to find, while in the small hours both thin out. Check whether you will pass border control, which depends on where the flights come from and where they go; the page on transit past two border desks describes the longest version.

Planning before the trip

Because you chose the gap, you can plan it well before leaving home. Reserve a room near the terminal for the hours you need, read the roster for two or three therapists whose hours fit, and write a day or two before the flight with both flight times, the room and the minute you must leave. The hour is confirmed then, and the deposit of half that every airport booking carries goes ahead once you accept.

Treating the connection as a stop

A long connection booked on purpose feels different from one imposed by a delay. There is time to shower, eat properly, rest and enjoy an unhurried session, and still be back at the gate early. Choose a longer session rather than the shortest one, since the gap allows it, and the hours stop being a cost and become part of the journey.

When it does not work

A long connection is only an asset if the first flight arrives roughly on time. Keep a margin, fix the hour only after landing if your first leg is prone to delays, and remember that the onward flight will not move for a session. The cancellation policy describes how notice works if your plans change, and the connection time entry explains why the airline's minimum figure is no guide to leaving the airport.

Questions

Is a long connection worth choosing for a session?

For many travellers it is, especially on very long journeys. A lower fare and a few hours lying flat between two long flights often outweigh arriving a little later.

Should I confirm before I fly?

A day or two ahead is usually right, once the room is reserved. If your first flight is often late, you may prefer to fix the hour after landing.

What length suits a planned long connection?

Two hours fits comfortably in a gap of seven hours or more; in a five-hour gap, ninety minutes is the longer end of what is sensible.
