Duty-free and a Schiphol transit massage: why the shopping waits for the way back
Duty-free shops line the route from the gate, and travellers on a long transit often buy something on the way out. If you are leaving the airport for a room, it pays to wait.
Airside shops are designed to catch passengers with time on their hands, and a transit passenger has plenty. The difficulty comes when that passenger then leaves for a room and a Schiphol airport massage. Coming back means passing security again, where the airport's rules on liquids, sealed bags and receipts apply to everything you carry, including whatever you bought an hour or two earlier.
The problem with buying first
Bottles of spirits, perfume and other liquids bought airside are usually sealed in a bag meant for the passenger's own flight. Once you leave and return, that bag goes through a fresh security check, and whether it passes depends on the rules in force at that moment and on how it was packed. It may pass without comment, or it may stay behind at the scanner. Either way, it is one more thing to carry to the room and back.
Shop on the way back instead
The simpler plan is to leave the airport with nothing new, take the session, and do the shopping after security on the way back, when the purchases go straight onto the onward flight. Airside shops stay open through the departure waves, and the stretch of time between security and boarding is a natural moment for them. The page on counting the real hours between flights shows how to leave room for it.
Gifts and the room
Anything you do need in the room, such as water or a snack, is easier to buy landside in the Plaza or at the hotel. Keep the room clear of shopping bags; a small room fills quickly, and the session is more comfortable without clutter on the bed or the floor. A bottle of water and some fruit picked up on the way to the hotel will do more for the flight ahead than anything on the duty-free shelves.
Arriving from outside Europe
Passengers arriving from outside the Schengen area, or connecting from outside the European Union, may meet stricter screening of liquids bought elsewhere. Leave such purchases sealed with the receipt attached, or better still, buy at Schiphol on the return. The guide to leaving the transit area covers the rest of the way out and back, and the reply to your first message sets out the hour, the therapist and her journey time once you have a room.
Questions
Can I take duty-free into the hotel room?
Yes, but it then has to pass security again on the way back. Buying after the session avoids the question altogether.
Will security on the way back be slower with shopping bags?
Often, because each bag is screened. Travelling back light keeps that queue as short as it can be.
Is there anywhere landside to buy water for the room?
Yes. The shops in Schiphol Plaza sell drinks and snacks, and most hotels have something at reception.
