Airside or landside at Schiphol: which side of security a massage can happen on

Airports split the world in two: the part anyone can walk into, and the part behind security that only passengers reach. Where your room sits in that division decides whether a session is possible at all.

At Schiphol the line runs straight through the terminal. Landside means the Plaza, the arrivals halls, the railway station, the bus stops and every hotel beyond them; airside means the piers, the gates, the lounges and the few places to sleep that lie behind security. Passengers in transit live airside by default, so a Schiphol airport massage always begins with a deliberate step across that line.

The airside rooms

Schiphol does have places to sleep behind security, from cabins rented by the hour to rooms meant for passengers who cannot or would rather not pass border control. For exactly that traveller they are useful. They are also closed to anyone without a boarding pass for that day, which includes every therapist, so no session can be arranged in one. If a booking confirmation mentions a location after security, or describes the room as for transfer passengers only, it is airside.

The landside rooms

Every other room near the airport is landside: the hotels reached on foot from the Plaza, those served by shuttle buses, and the hotels of Schiphol-Rijk and Schiphol-Oost a short drive away. Any of them can hold a session, provided the room is checked out to you. The short-stay room guide covers rooms let by the hour, and the glossary entry on the transit area marks where the airside begins.

Crossing and crossing back

Stepping from airside to landside costs the walk to the exit and, for anyone arriving from outside the Schengen area, a passage through entry control. Coming back costs security and, for a flight leaving Europe, the exit desk. Those two crossings are the real price of a landside room, and on a short connection they can cost more time than the room is worth. The page on counting the real hours between flights helps you decide.

A practical check before you reserve

Before reserving anything, read the address and the words around it. A street address in Schiphol, Schiphol-Rijk, Schiphol-Oost or Amsterdam means landside. A pier name, a gate number or a reference to the transfer area means airside. When in doubt, ask the hotel directly whether a visitor without a boarding pass can reach your door, because that is the only question that matters for a booking. Once the answer is yes, write with the flights, the room and the minute you must leave.

Questions

Can I take an airside room and meet her landside?

No. A session needs a room checked out to you that she can reach, and nothing in the public areas of the terminal qualifies.

Are the hotels in Schiphol-Rijk and Schiphol-Oost landside?

Yes. Both are business districts outside the terminal, reached by shuttle bus or a short taxi ride, and rooms there are ordinary hotel rooms.

Does my onward boarding pass let me bring a visitor airside?

No. A boarding pass admits only its holder, which is exactly why every session takes place on the landside.
